ENGINEERED, BUCKLED, HARDWORKING.

The Brunel

An engineer's logic, on a barefoot last.

The engineer boot originated on the American railway in the 1930s, as a lace-free option designed to keep the wearer safe from getting caught in machinery. Further down the line the boot became popular with other workers such as welders, who could quickly remove the boot if it caught a spark or ember.

The Gaucho Ninja Brunel Engineer boot carries the name of one of the world's most famous engineers - Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who created railways and bridges all over the UK. This boot is designed with the same tenacity, creativity, and originality its namesake holds.

The boot features a mid-calf, pull-on shaft with a buckle harness strap and leather pull loops front and rear. A side zip, so the boot goes on seamlessly - a concession never present in the original design, yet one that matters most on a high instep. The Gaucho Ninja shuriken logo is embossed on the shaft - subtle, yet unmistakable.

Colourways: Crazy Gaucho is a brown leather: it lightens where it bends, darkens with conditioner, and over time, records the marks of your journey. Distressed Black leather is already worn in, simply waiting your arrival.

A hardworking boot, built to be repaired.

Size and Fit

Built on the X-Wide last, EU 37–48, unisex. Shaft height 20 cm from the sole; shaft circumference at the top 32 cm, adjustable at the harness strap. (Size 42 as reference)

A traditional engineer boot is pulled on against the instep and is hard work for a high instep or a high arch. The Brunel has a side zip, so it is far easier to get on and off.

If you are between sizes, use the removable 4.5 mm insole as your adjustment - in for a more snug fit, remove for volume.

We highly recommend you measure your feet before buying. Measure them by placing your heel against a wall, measure a line in cm from the center of your heel to your biggest toe whilst barefooted. Please insert this value in our size guide to know exactly your EU size. Our lasts are unique to us. Contact us if you need support about your size.

MATERIALS

-Crazy Gaucho - pull-up vegetable-tanned leather. The oils move when the leather bends, so every crease lightens and then darkens with conditioner.
-Distressed Black - ready to carry its wear from the first day.
-Solid brass buckle
-Heavy duty YKK zips
-Natural leather lining

-Removable insock
-Veg tan leather insole
-Natural rubber Sacred Geometry sole
-Cork filler under the insole

Made by one of our artisan workshops in China.

CONSTRUCTION

Goodyear welted. A leather welt is stitched to the upper and insole in a single loop; the sole is stitched to the welt, never to the upper. The sole is replaced at the welt and the upper is untouched.

Most engineer boots on the market today are cemented -glued. When the sole goes, the boot goes. Our Goodyear Welted boots are different.

Any cobbler can resole these boots. The Sacred Geometry sole replacement is available to buy here. The strap and buckle can be replaced if they ever wear out. This is footwear designed for years, not seasons.

CARE Instructions

Vegetable-tanned leather develops a rich patina over time and is designed to age with you.

  • -Clean regularly with a soft brush
  • -Use a natural saddle soap when needed
  • -Condition sparingly using our organic plant based leather conditioner
  • -Avoid direct heat when drying

Proper care allows the leather -and the shoe - to improve with age.

Fibonacci's Concept

Across nature — in shells, plants, and the way bodies move — the same proportional systems repeat. Not because they are beautiful, but because they work.

Movement & Balance

Designed Around the Body

Barefoot geometry allows the foot to move as it was designed to — with natural alignment, balance, and feedback from the ground.

By avoiding raised heels, excessive cushioning, and narrow toe shapes, this collection supports:

  • -Natural posture
  • -Even pressure distribution
  • -Reduced restriction during movement

Comfort here comes from balance, not padding.

The Sacred Geometry sole applies this natural logic beneath the foot, using proportion and flow to distribute pressure evenly and support movement without force or correction.

This is not decoration. It is structure.

Craft over speed

The Heritage

'People often ask why I still use these old methods.

It’s because 100 years ago, my family in Argentina didn't just work with leather; they made items to ensure their safety and comfort. A hundred years ago, a Gaucho’s saddle was key to his work. Today, I’m bringing that same lineage into the Sacred Geometry collection. We aren't just making footwear; we’re honoring a century of craft.

In a world of fast fashion, we choose to go slow. We only produce in limited runs.

Why?

Because quality like this takes time, and we respect the materials too much to waste them. When you pre-order, you’re not just buying a shoe - you’re allowing us to prioritise craft over speed, and quality over quantity.'

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the Brunel
  • An engineer boot is a laceless mid-calf pull-on boot with a buckled harness strap, developed for workshop and rail work where laces were a hazard. The Brunel is that silhouette built on the Gaucho Ninja X-Wide barefoot last with a zero-drop sole.

  • Yes. The Brunel has a side zip in addition to the pull loops, so the boot does not have to be forced over the instep.

  • Three things a standard engineer boot does not have: an extra-wide last with a wide round toe box, a zero-drop sole with no heel elevation, and a flexible sole. The Brunel has all three.

  • Crazy Gaucho is a pull-up leather. It lightens where it flexes and darkens back with conditioner, so the boot keeps a record of how you walk. Distressed Black carries its character from day one.

  • Yes. The Brunel is Goodyear welted, so the sole can be replaced by any cobbler as many times as the upper allows.
