Goodyear Welting: The Gold Standard for Durability

The Goodyear welt process is a machine-based alternative to the traditional hand-welted method (c. 1500) for the manufacture of footwear, allowing them to be resoled repeatedly, extending the shoe's lifespan.. It was invented in the mid-19th century by August Destouy, who worked for Charles Goodyear Jr., the son of Charles Goodyear, who invented vulcanized rubber. The technique involves sewing a strip (welt) to the upper and a leather strip (insole) of the shoe as an attach-point for the sole.

Advantages:

-Durability: The welt acts as a buffer between the insole and the outsole, reducing wear on both.

- Weather Resistance: The welting process makes the shoes less penetrable by water.

- Ease of Repair: Since the sole can be replaced multiple times, the shoes can last for decades with proper care.

- Comfort: Over time, the insole will mold to the wearer's foot shape, enhancing comfort.

Blake Stitching: Simplicity and Elegance



Developed by Lyman Reed Blake in the 1850s, traditional Blake stitching involves directly stitching the outer sole to the upper of a shoe. At Gaucho Ninja, we tuned the Blake construction to make it as durable and with ease to repair as the Goodyear welted construction, by Blake stitching the upper to the midsole and insole. The outer sole is then glued and in some designs, a Stitchdown is added to the edge of the shoe, connecting the midsole to the outsole through a strong stitch. This variation of the technique is called Rapid Blake, and has similar faculties to the Goodyear construction.

Advantages:

- Flexibility: Less material between the insole and outsole allows for more foot flexibility.

- Aesthetic: The sole can be cut closer to the upper, allowing for a more refined and sleek design.

- Lightweight: Due to the lack of extra layers, shoes are often lighter.

- Versatile. Allows to create any design due its construction method.

- Ease of Repair: Since the sole can be replaced multiple times, the shoes can last for decades with proper care.

- Comfort: Over time, the insole will mold to the wearer's foot shape, enhancing comfort.

Stitchdown Construction: Robust and Reliable



Stitchdown construction is somewhat similar to Goodyear welting but distinguished by the upper leather being turned outward and stitched directly to the sole, creating a “flanged” look. This method is particularly ideal for our Barefoot Pals range, as we can guarantee the maximum flexibility and lightweight due the minimal layers of the shoe: Upper, midsole and sole with no insole.
